Dear LSES Families and Friends,

I am truly excited to serve as the new principal of Lithia Springs Elementary School! My educational belief is that it takes a village to educate a child. We must all work together to motivate and cultivate our young learners’ desires to strive for excellence in every walk of life. Our teachers and staff strive to create a family atmosphere where everyone is encouraged to get involved in the learning process. I look forward to meeting all of you, and I am enthusiastic about building relationships with our Lion Cubs!

This past year has been a challenging one for many of us, and the impact of Covid-19 will have long-lasting effects on our community. While we begin to give our students opportunities to learn and grow through technology and exploration, we must also educate our students on how to adapt to our ‘new normal.’ My staff and I are dedicated to teaching our students the importance of good hygiene and respect for personal boundaries. We will also continue to sanitize and disinfect all high-use areas, and we will establish procedures for parents and visitors when entering the building. Our primary goal is to keep everyone safe and comfortable.

Our faculty and staff members are working hard to prepare our students for a year filled with challenging and engaging learning activities. Teachers will receive Google certification to support our digital learning initiative, and our leadership team will evaluate our school improvement plan to ensure that we are taking the appropriate steps to increase student achievement. We will also incorporate a Cub Intervention period to provide additional support in reading and math for our struggling learners and to accelerate our gifted and advanced learners.

As I step into my new role as principal of LSES, I am celebrating my 20th year in education. I have had the opportunity to serve in many teaching and leadership roles that include ELA teacher, SS teacher, grade level chairperson, team leader, SST coordinator, mentor teacher, and assistant principal. I have been recognized as Teacher of the Year (2010), and Collaborative Team Teacher of the Year (2011). I received a Bachelor of Science in Middle Grades Education (2001), a Master of Arts in Administration and Supervision (2003), and an Educational Specialist degree in Educational Leadership (2009). I have been a resident of Douglas County for the past 12 years, and I share my life with my adoring husband, 3 amazing daughters and a Yorkshire terrier named Dash.

Our motto this year is, “We have P.R.I.D.E in our stride!” Our faculty and staff are committed to taking Personal Responsibility In Developing Excellence in our students. Our students will have P.R.I.D.E in being Polite, Responsible, In Control, Doing their Best and Earning/Giving respect!

I have an open door policy, so I welcome parents and community members to stop in and see what we are doing!

Sincerely,

Tonia Avent Small
